The Earth is round. The sky is round. The sun and the full moon are round. All good things are round. That is why the native people from Lapland to Chukotka and from Alaska to Greenland lived in round-floored homes (koda). Koda (tipi-like building) was like a small world with its earth floor, its sky ceiling, and its mother pole, up which the spirit of the wizard began its ascent. So thought the old koda (tipi) dwellers when new times began. Who knows, maybe they were right.

KODA

We are a design research studio investigating the mythological cosmology of the indigenous finno-ugric people living on the land of current Eesti (Estonia, Aesti). A land where ancient wisdom preserved in the rich verbal tradition and was imprinted into the objects and rituals living to this day.

Rooted in tradition

As a cross-pollinator between ethnology, art and design we are focused on the the research and interpretation of the local indigenous heritage. We are inspired by our umwelt (umailm) and ancient knowledge embedded in the rich artisanal tradition. Our research is materialised through limited edition conceptual, functional as well as ritualistic objects.
